This summer, the young adults at Valley View traveled to Piedras Negras, Mexico to work with Vida Nueva Ministries. Mike Havens, our Family Minister and trip leader, shares a bit about their experience:
Vida Nueva Ministries has a school that was gearing up for the new Fall semester. We worked at the school primarily, painting twelve classrooms that were in need of a good makeover. The school is working on preparing a new building and classrooms to expand their middle school, so painting the existing classrooms freed them up to work on those new projects.
On Sunday, we attended their “youth” class and worship services. I preached for the service and we all enjoyed worshipping with our Mexican brothers and sisters. Sunday evening, we had a party for the church family. We provided games for the kids and food for the families. We had great attendance and it was fun to be able to interact with the families from the church.
It was nice being able to hear the story of what God was doing through the school and their various ministries. The school is a Christian school, yet it brings in about 75% non-Christians into the school. We are very thankful for the church there standing strong in the midst of hard times.
We were told several times how grateful they were for us coming. Most of the churches in the States have chosen not to go south for safety reasons. Our visit really boosted their spirits and encouraged them greatly – it helped them to be encouraged to press on.
Our team worked very well together! They worked hard in the 100 degree heat and were always willing to do whatever needed to be done. We are so thankful for the opportunity to travel to Piedras Negras. Thank you for praying for us!
Here’s a great video about the trip:
