Good News for the Poor

From the fourth chapter of Luke:

Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
    that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.’

He then rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened to Him. Then he began by saying to them, ‘The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day.’

Our Lord cares about the poor. Throughout the Scriptures it is seen that our Lord has compassion for those who are in need.

There is a group of believers at OurCalling (ourcalling.org) who have been commissioned by our Lord Jesus to join Him in the work of bringing Good News to the poor. They provide life skills, addiction recovery, food, clothing, and most importantly, the love and truth of Jesus for residents of Dallas who are without homes.

In June, our church family donated shoes and pants for those who are a part of the ministry at OurCalling. In July, we cooked pork loin, baked beans and brownies for them during Into the Streets. We want to continue to love and support this ministry; and here are several opportunities for us to do so this Fall:

On September 28 and on November 2, we will be joining OurCalling for Monday Night Football as we grill some burgers and hot dogs for them. This will be a great opportunity to share our lives with men and woman who need to experience the love of Christ and who could really use some words of encouragement! If you’re interested in going to Monday Night Football, email Chad at cpickens@vvcc.org.

During the months of October and November, we will be donating coats and blankets for OurCalling, so that those whom they minister to can stay warm through the winter.

On Thanksgiving Day (November 26), we will join OurCalling in serving dinner to their community .  There will be opportunities to help with set up the day before, to be a host for the meal, to serve the meal, and to distribute coats and blankets. Registration will be online starting October 1 at http://www.ourcalling.org/volunteer/thanksgiving/

Together, let’s join this ministry of sharing the Good News of our Great God.
