Have you ever been in a spot where you feel like you just don’t belong? You know, the kind of thing when you look around and wonder who to talk to or where to sit… one of those times when you pick at your fingernails while discreetly trying to think of some interesting tidbit to say to the people around you. Those times in life are some of my least favorite!
I remember when I moved to a new high school. My biggest fear wasn’t about getting lost in the new school, being late to class, or not being able to get my locker open. My biggest fear was lunchtime; more specifically, the cafeteria. I pictured myself walking into that big room full of tables with attached benches, holding my brown paper bag lunch, and not knowing where to sit. I dreaded 12:18pm on that first day of school. When the bell rang for lunch, I walked as slowly as I could down the hall to the cafeteria hoping that if I dragged my feet long enough, lunch would be over before I made it there. As I walked, my heart pounded and my stomach was in knots. But, as I neared the cafeteria doors, Jeanne appeared. Jeanne was just another student in my morning English class, but at that moment, when I heard the words, “Hey, do you want to sit with us?”, Jeanne was like an angel sent from above. Immediately, my palms stopped sweating, my heart returned to its normal rate, and my stomach settled. I’d been accepted; I had a place to fit in. I was secure!
Ephesians 1:13-14 reads, “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of His glory.” (emphasis mine.)
God marks each of us who believe in Him with a seal! He includes us in His family in His inheritance. We are accepted. We have a place to fit in. We are secure!
